Funded Assistant position in Computational Biology at Faculty Of Medicine And Life Sciences, University of Tampere in Finland

The University of Tampere is a multidisciplinary international academic institution with more than 16,000 students and about 2,200 staff members, located in the dynamic city of Tampere, Finland. The University values creativity, societal responsibility and academic freedom as well as equal chances for learning, gaining knowledge, participating and influencing. Strategic research areas of the University are health and society.

Computational Biology group at the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, University of Tampere invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral researcher position with possibility for extension. The planned commencement date for the position is January 1 2018 or as mutually agreed.

Job description

A postdoctoral researcher position is available in area of regulatory genomics. Computational Biology group is part of the Center of Excellence in Tumour Genetics research and currently consists of 35 members with interdisciplinary and international backgrounds. Main responsibilities are:

  • Analysis of in house generated epigenetic data derived from primary tumor tissues (e.g. open chromatin data)
  • Integration of chromatin information with genomic (WGS), transcriptomic (RNA-seq), and proteomic data (SWATH) from the same patients.
  • Incorporation of data from public resources (e.g. Encode and The Cancer Genome Atlas) into the analysis
  • Development of computational modeling of gene expression based on above mentioned data sources.

Aim of the project is to utilize tumor specific data from regulatory regions together with mathematical modeling of the regulatory networks to gain detailed understanding on how the genome aberrations generate the cancer phenotype through chromatin reorganization. Specifically we want to uncover the mechanisms that drive the aggressive lethal form of prostate cancer. Project is funded by the Academy of Finland.

Requirements

We are recruiting an outstanding PhD or strong candidate with MSc in computational sciences (e.g. bioinformatics, computer sciences, mathematics, statistics, etc) with a strong drive and an ability to conduct independent research. In case a MSc is selected, the position will be filled as a doctoral student position.

Position is offered for two years with possibility for extension. The planned starting date for the position  is 1 January, 2018. We offer a unique, youthful, well-resourced and interdisciplinary research environment that combines both computational and experimental research.
