We are looking for an applicant with a MSc degree in pharmacy, (bio)chemistry, physics, chemical engineering or in other relevant natural science area.

The position of the doctoral student will be located at the Division of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Mass Spectrometry and Metabolomics group. The main research focus of the Mass Spectrometry and Metabolomics Group is to develop novel and more sensitive, selective and faster mass spectrometric (e.g. LC-MS) methods for the analysis of drugs and biomolecules, as well as their metabolites in biological samples, such as urine, blood, cells and brain tissue by using various mass spectrometry techniques.

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on her/his own doctoral thesis and to complete her/his postgraduate studies. The duties also include teaching and other tasks. The appointee for a doctoral student position must obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Helsinki and approval by a suitable doctoral programme. Successful candidate is expected to have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team is also required. Previous experience on pharmaceutical analysis, bioanalysis, analytical chemistry and/or mass spectrometry is considered a benefit, but not necessary. The research field of the PhD studies is mass spectrometric bioanalysis. Teaching related duties will cover a maximum of 20 % of the total working hours.

The salary is based on the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish universities. Doctoral students typically start from level 2 and advance to level 3, when the research work and studies have advanced according to the plan and the publication work has begun, and eventually to level 4, when the time to completing the thesis is about one year. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. In total, the starting salary of a doctoral student will be about 2200-2500 EUR per month. The doctoral student may be hired as a research assistant until admission to a doctoral programme; the salary will be similar to a doctoral student position. There will be a probationary period. Standard Finnish pension benefits and occupational health care are provided for university employees.
