Funded PhD positions; at Department of Trauma Surgery, University Hospital Frankfurt, Goethe University, Frankfurt; in Germany

The Dept. of Trauma Surgery currently has an open call for a PhD student position funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). The contract will be fixed-term for three years.

Situated in an outstanding research environment at the University Hospital of the Goethe University, campus Niederrad, the research activities center around three well-connected research branches: 1. Human studies on traumatized patients focussing on the biologic post-injury inflammatory response; 2. in vivo studies elaborating the immunological response to trauma/injury in different compartments (blood cells, lung and liver tissue, humoral mediators) and 3. in vitro studies uncovering the regulating biological processes.

The immune response to trauma (accidents, falls etc.) results often in increased organ complication rates, depicting a clinically highly relevant research field. Here, notably cells of the innate immune system play a significant role. Next to the characterization of the post-injury immune response, adequate biomarkers, which are capable of indicating organ complications after trauma are obligatory in the clinical setting.
As one those potential biomarkers, Club Cell Protein (CC)16 is indicating pulmonary complications in the clinical course. Nonetheless, the functional role of some biomarkers, notably CC16 in the development of e.g. lung complications after traumatic injury is unknown. In this project the functional role of CC16 and other biomarkers will be evaluated in certain in vivo models of traumatic injury. Here, notably cells of the innate immunity arm are of interest.

We invite highly qualified candidates with a strong commitment to basic and clinical science and in vivoresearch to apply.

Applicants should hold an MSc (or equivalent degree) with a background in biological sciences, neurosciences, biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology or a related discipline. Experience in cell biology, molecular biology field is mandatory.
