School Strategic Vision
The School has plans for significant expansion over the next period. Our aim is to place the School into the top 10 Computer Science schools in China, and expand our teaching and research capacity to the similar level possessed by our home school back in Nottingham UK (top 10 in the UK according to the most recent REF in 2014).
Guided by the British teaching philosophy, our curriculum is the same as the one used in our home campus in the UK. We have an outstanding reputation for teaching quality. Our commitment to maintaining excellence in the provision of learning and teaching ensures that the University is consistently among the highest ranking performers in independent teaching assessments. Our high quality teaching is reflected by both our student intakes of extremely highly qualified students (the highest Gaokao score in UNNC) and the successes of our graduates. Most of our undergraduates will go on to pursue postgraduate studies, of which 83% of them have gone to the world top 100 universities, including MIT, Cambridge, Oxford, Carnegie Mellon, etc. After graduation, our students are highly sought after in the industry with many of them working at multi-national corporations like IBM, Microsoft, Intel, Alibaba, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, PWC, and companies in the financial sector.
The School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham is ranked in the top 10 UK academic institutions in the latest Research Excellence Framework(2014) in which 88% of our research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. The School of Computer Science at UNNC collaborates closely with the UK home school and has made significant developments in research since its establishment in 2005. The School’s current research expertise covers computational intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and imaging, data mining and intelligent agents and reasoning, software engineering, modeling and optimization, and theoretical areas such as domain theory and computable analysis. Computer Science is one of UNNC’s most successful schools in terms of being awarded research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) as well as provincial and municipal research councils. Thanks to the booming IT and AI industries in China, we have now established strong collaborations with top Chinese IT companies like Baidu, Alibaba, PingAn Doctor, and Face++.
International Doctoral Innovation Center (IDIC) in Digital Economy
UNNC received a PhD license from the Ministry of Education of China in 2009. The International Doctoral Innovation Centre (IDIC) was opened in 2012 at the University of Nottingham UK and UNNC. The Centre is funded by the University of Nottingham, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council and Ningbo Municipal Government. The unique model of the Centre integrates a number of co-dependent strands, Doctoral Training Centre, Innovation-led Research and Accelerator Fund to achieve an exciting new environment for world-leading research. It is immersed within Nottingham’s vibrant Doctoral Training Centres at the forefront of UK doctoral education to train 100 of the brightest young PhD researchers in six years. Computer Science leads this initiative and operates the digital economy strand.

Students use their own devices to connect to our Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, which provides a standard UNNC Windows desktop, with all their files and programs, on their laptop no-matter where in the world they are. The Flexible Learning Space is further enhanced by 38 high-specification desktop PC’s around the edge of the space to support tasks, which require extra computational power or students without laptops.
