The Experimental Medicine Initiative to Explore New Therapies (EMINENT) invite applications for a prestigious fully-funded, BRC-MRC-GSK Clinical Research Fellowship-PhD studentship at the Imperial College London.EMINENT is an MRC-Industry co-funded programme, which brings together investigators and researchers from University College London (UCL), the University of Cambridge, the University of Glasgow, the University of Newcastle, Imperial College London and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to undertake novel science that would not be possible outside such a cross-sector network. Academic researchers gain unprecedented access to GSK’s unlicensed asset portfolio, via collaborative preclinical and experimental medicine studies aimed at enhancing the understanding of disease mechanisms and accelerating the development of novel therapeutics for patients in underserved disease areas.The overarching aim of EMINENT is to deliver significant scientific progress, to understand disease mechanisms, and develop new therapeutic strategies. Impact and success will be assessed across three key areas: Scientific innovation, network cohesion, and building research capacity through creating a cadre of scientific and clinical leaders promoting the benefits of multiple partner clinical/ preclinical studies holding a rich base of knowledge and skills developed within the unique industrial-academic research environment of EMINENT.The StudentshipThis innovative studentship is a partnership between the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Imperial College, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and GSK, and provides an unrivalled opportunity to undertake high quality research in experimental medicine in collaboration with academic and industrial supervisors. The studentship should particularly appeal to clinicians with a subspecialty interest and experience in respiratory medicine, infectious disease/virology and immunology. The studentship is available from autumn 2019 and the award covers the Fellow’s salary for three years, research consumables and PhD fees.The ProjectsThe project will represent a unique opportunity to join the collaboration between Prof Openshaw, colleagues across the EMINENT network, and GSK. The successful candidate will join Imperial College London with the aim of completing their doctoral studies.
Duties and responsibilities
The successful applicant will join an experienced team to become skilled in leading the clinical conduct and analysis of human RSV infection challenge studies in older adults, to investigate age-related factors responsible for increased susceptibility to more severe disease in this age group. This will include histological and transcriptomic analysis of lower airway tissue responses to infection to determine the role of dysregulated inflammation with the aim of identifying potential targets or pathways for intervention to improve disease outcome. The project will provide the successful applicants with the opportunity to apply their strengths to pre-clinical and experimental medicine and gain unique hands-on experience in translational medicine.The successful applicant will have the opportunity to spend time embedded within GSK as well as working with academic collaborators. During the industrial placement, applicants will pursue their project work in collaboration with the relevant GSK project teams and gain an understanding of how science influences R&D decision making. The structured mentoring and training programme afforded by EMINENT will allow candidates to develop as academic clinicians enhanced with industry experience in designing and conducting experimental medicine studies.
It is essential that the applicant is fully registered with the GMC, and desirable that they already hold a National Training Number.
