PhD Position – Comprehensive Inorganic Nanoparticle Detection by ICP-TOFMS
The aim of this project is to develop an analytical strategy and measurement system for the quantification and characterization of inorganic nanoparticle (NPs) pollution in environmental samples. The researcher will employ state-of-the-art inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ICPTOFMS) instrumentation to detect and determine the elemental composition of individual NPs. Based on unique elemental compositions of individual NPs, ICPTOFMS will be investigated as a means to directly classify and quantify anthropogenic inorganic NPs in the environment and distinguish them from natural occurring NPs. The method and instrumentation developed in this research will open the door to measuring the distributions of inorganic NPs in many environments, which is lacking in our current assessments of nanomaterial fate and transport.
The candidate should hold Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in chemistry or related fields. The highly motivated candidate should be particularly interested in the analytical sciences, mass spectrometry, data analysis, and environmental science. Computer programming skills in Matlab or Python with an interest in data clustering and machine learning would be a strong benefit.
