PhD position in ecosystem modelling

The professorship “Land Surface-Atmosphere Interactions” at the TUM School of Life Sciences Weihenstephan, Freising, investigates impacts of global climate and land use change on terrestrial ecosystems and potential feedbacks at regional and global scale. - Full university degree (Diploma/M.Sc.) in in geo-ecology, environmental/forest science, biology or a related discipline.
- Sound knowledge in ecosystem modelling and scientific programming (preferably R and/or C++) is required.
- You should be able to communicate concepts and results in fluent English.
- Experience in scientific project management and proposal writing is an asset.
- We expect the candidate to have good communication skills and the ability to work in a team.
Tasks You will be a team member of the FOREXCLIM project “Forests and extreme weather events: Solutions for risk resilient management”. Together with partners from the TUM Institute of Forest Management, University of Lund and University of Ljubljana, you will investigate the interactions between extreme weather (heat waves, drought, storms), subsequent forest susceptibility to fire and pathogens, market developments, forest management and related uncertainties to determine on how current forest management strategies should be adapted to sustain risk-resilient multifunctional forest landscapes. The goal is to develop a model-based strategy for identifying and operationalizing risk resilient forest management regimes.
Specific tasks of the PhD position are
- to apply the process-based forest ecosystem model LPJ-GUESS for forests at European scale,
- to simulate impacts of extreme events on the most important European tree species/stand types and
- to estimate the risk for extreme event-induced forest damage and impacts on forest ecosystem services.
In close collaboration with our partners, the PhD student contributes to the integration of LPJ-GUESS with a multi-objective, risk-sensitive optimization model, such that simulated responses of ecosystem services under climate change and alternative management practices inform the economic optimisation and vice-versa.
