The candidate will work in the Biomedical Research Institute (BIOMED) at Hasselt University, which is a highly interactive and well-equipped multidisciplinary institute where both fundamental and applied research is performed.
In the laboratory of neurophysiology (Jean-Michel Rigo & Bert Brône) we study cellular neurophysiological processes in the developing brain. The glycine receptor alpha2 plays an important role in the neuronal development and disruption of its function is linked to autism. The research focus of this specific project is on the subcellular localization of the glycine receptor alpha2 and on the importance of this localization on its function in neuronal networks in the brain. State of the art fluorescence imaging equipment is available in the institute through collaboration with copromotor Prof. Jelle Hendrix.
In addition, the scholar will take up a limited teaching duty in the faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences of Hasselt University.
- Master in biomedical (life) sciences, medicine, biology, biochemistry, bioengineering (or equivalent)
- Demonstrable interest in neurobiology.
- A certificate of Laboratory Animal Sciences is an asset.
- Able to work in team as well as individually.
- Good knowledge of oral and written English.
- Good social and communicative skills.
- Problem solving capacity.
- Experience with molecular biological techniques in combination with fluorescence imaging and/or patch clamp techniques (e.g. during master thesis) is a merit.
You will be appointed and paid as PhD student.
