Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology is inviting applications for PhD Studentship in AL-alloys for Automotive Applications at Brunel University London and in collaboration with Constellium. International applicants are eligible to apply for this studentship.
The work will take place in BCAST’s Advanced Metal Casting Centre (AMCC) and Advanced Metal Processing Centre (AMPC), which are new scale-up facilities that bridge the gap between fundamental research and full-scale industrialization and are aimed at meeting the short, medium and long term needs of the automotive industry.
Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology is an academic research center focusing on both fundamental and applied research on solidification of metallic materials.
Course Level: Studentships are available to pursue PhD programme.
Study Subject: Studentships are awarded in the field of Al-alloys for automotive applications. The successful candidate will join a team working on the development of ultra-high performance 6xxx aluminum alloys for automotive applications. He/she will focus on one of the following topics based on their experience and interest:
- Understanding manufacturing induced mechanical properties through computer modeling and simulation of both materials and processes.
- Understanding the formation mechanisms and developing effective approaches to control secondary phase particles during the melt conditioned direct chill (MC-DC) casting process developed by BCAST.
- Understanding the interactions between heat treatment and deformation processing aiming to achieve significant improvement of mechanical performance.
- Understanding the interactions between precipitates and dislocations using advanced electronic microscopy techniques.
Scholarship Award: Up to two funded positions are available.
Scholarship can be taken in the UK
Eligibility: Applicants are required to have an upper second or first class undergraduate honors degree (or a recognized equivalent from an overseas university) in metallurgy/materials science or another related engineering or physical science. A Masters level qualification is desirable. In addition, the successful candidate should be highly motivated, able to work within a team and have good communication skills. The successful candidates are expected to commence at the latest in October 2017.
