The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Fibre and Polymer Technology. Many research activities are interdisciplinary across the borders from Chemistry to Materials science, Environmental science, Biochemistry, Biology and Medicine. The School offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Chemistry, Degree Programs in Engineering Chemistry, Technical Preparatory Year and three international master programs: Chemical Engineering for Energy and the Environment, Macromolecular Materials and Molecular Science and Engineering. Job description

The development of next generation solar cells is a highly active research field with a potentially large impact for society. Understanding the working mechanisms of different types of solar cells is an important part of this research.

New opportunities for this arise from a combination of X-ray spectroscopies (specifically photoelectron spectroscopy) with time-resolved measurements. Such methods can give insights into the dynamics and energetics of the photon-to-electron conversion process and into the stability of solar cell materials. In this PhD project these methods will be further developed and applied to materials of relevance for hybrid, quantum dot and dye-sensitized solar cells. The project will involve fabrication of solar cell samples, measurements at synchrotron radiation facilities and data analysis. The PhD student will be based at the Chemistry Department at KTH in Stockholm but regular measurement times at synchrotrons (e.g. Max IV, Lund; Bessy II, Berlin) will be an important part of the project. Work at synchrotrons will often be carried out as part of a larger experimental team. The research will be performed in collaboration with other research groups and as part of Centre for Molecular devices at KTH and Uppsala University, which will provide opportunities for collaboration, access to materials and other types of measurement.


The applicant is expected to have a Masters degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or equivalent at the time of starting the PhD studies. Applicants should be highly motivated, possess the ability to perform critical analysis and have an interest in the topic related to the position. Good communication skills in oral and written English are required. Experience with solar cell research and/or experience with synchrotron-based research is a merit.
