Research Title: Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) for hotel buildings

Summary of Project
As of 1st April 2018, commercial landlords will not be allowed to grant a tenancy on a building if it has an EPC rating of a band lower than ‘E’. It is estimated that as much as 20% of commercial property in the UK will fail to meet the new standards. The government has also declared its wish to raise the standard further such that the minimum standard is likely to rise to a D rating by 2025 and a C rating by 2030. This research will focus on the consequences of MEES legislation to hotel and other commercial buildings. Building modelling, simulation tools and site investigation will be used to study non-compliant buildings and investigate the required measures in order to comply with MEES while maintaining guest comfort. Results of this research will be beneficial for the construction industry as it will provide guidelines for the retrofitting of existing hotel buildings to MEES.
This is a collaborative project between the University of West London, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and Hilton.
The project will:
- Critically review the current retrofitting practices in the hotel industry.
- Develop a methodology for the analysis of hotel buildings under the MEES using CIBSE weather data.
- Identify the key contributors for improving the energy performance of hotel buildings.
- Using CIBSE projected weather data, investigate the future performance of hotel buildings and whether they will be able to comply with the stricter regulations that are likely to be put in place.
- Produce practical guidelines for retrofitting hotel buildings to comply with MEES.
- Develop understanding of the potential future performance of hotels in light of changing technology and additional services, for example electrical vehicle charging stations, and their impact on EPC calculation
Depending on how you meet the eligibility criteria, a full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for the 3-year duration of your PhD and an annual stipend of £10,000 tax free (£830 per month). For international candidates the award covers an international fees waiver only.
You should have at least an upper-second-class honours degree or international equivalent, in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related subject.
The award is available to all nationalities. In the case of international candidates if English is not your first language, you should have IELTS 6.5 or higher.
You must also have the potential for performing original research.
