PhD student: Chemistry, Pharmaceutical, Medical Technology, Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland, Deadline 31 July 2019

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people. For the Clay Sorption Mechanism Group of the Laboratory for Waste Management we are looking for a

Your tasks

You will investigate the interaction between redox-sensitive radionuclides (e.g., U, Tc, or Se), and purified Fe(II)/(III)-containing clay minerals by combining different approaches: (i) adsorption experiments with radionuclides under different relevant geochemical conditions, (ii) molecular scale speciation using X-Ray absorption spectroscopy and (iii) adsorption modelling. The aim is to correlate mineral properties with respect to its redox reactive iron content to the degree of radionuclides retention and molecular scale surface speciation. To accomplish this work you will have to carry out experiments in a radiochemical A-type laboratory, to perform X-Ray absorption spectroscopic measurements at the Rossendorf Beamline (ROBL) located at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble (France) and to evaluate and model your data. Your working location will be at PSI, however, you will travel frequently to the project partners at ROBL in Grenoble and BRGM in Orleans (France). You will communicate your scientific results in peer-reviewed journals, workshops and conferences.

Your profile

You are a highly-motivated individual with good communication skills in English and easily adaptable to different working environments. You hold a Master degree/Diploma in chemistry, earth or environmental sciences or related field. Welcome assets include experience in the handling of radionuclides, in electrochemistry or in synchrotron based X-Ray absorption spectroscopy.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure. For further information please contact Dr Maria Marques, phone +41 56 310 23 10.Please submit your application online by 31 July 2019 (including addresses of referees) for the position as a PhD Student (index no. 4402-00).Paul Scherrer Institut, Human Resources Management, Sabrina Orteca, 5232 Villigen PSI, Switzerland
